Neuropathy Relief in Lakewood, WANeuropathy Relief in Lakewood, WA: Neuropathy is a condition marked by pain, numbness or tingling and stinging sensations in the limbs, hands and feet. The condition mainly affects the peripheral nervous system, which is the collection of nerves that run into your body’s extremities from the brain and spinal cord. Roughly a third of all neuropathic patients are diabetic. Another third have symptoms caused by poor nutrition, traumatic injury, tumors, auto-immune disorders or other diseases. The final third have no identifiable cause. These are called idiopathic patients.

Do you suffer from neuropathy?

Neuropathy affects between 10 to 20 million Americans. Neuropathy is a condition whereby the nerves in our body are damaged and are not working correctly. Most sufferers who are neuropathic suffer from peripheral neuropathy and complain of numbness in the hands and feet, painful tingling sensations in the feet, night-time discomfort, pin-like sensations with each movement and other painful feelings that can linger on for years.

Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Numbness or burning pain
  • A sensation of wearing a “glove” or “sock”
  • Sharp, jabbing, shooting or electric-like pain
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
  • Difficulty sleeping because of feet and leg pain
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle cramping/twitching
  • Difficulty walking or moving the arms
  • Unusual sweating
  • Abnormalities in blood pressure or pulse

Diabetic neuropathy

Neuropathy is often caused by diabetes. When this is the case, it is referred to as diabetic neuropathy. When blood sugar levels in the body are too high for too long, nerve damage may result causing the neuropathy condition.

Treatments are available to help manage some of the symptoms. One treatment goal is to keep blood glucose levels under control through a combination of diet and supplementation so that the neuropathy does not worsen. Keeping blood glucose levels in check has been shown to improve symptoms and prevent worsening of the pain.
